Why families perform it

Mundan is performed for boys and girls alike. Hair grown from birth is traditionally understood to carry traces of what came before, and shaving it is a way of setting the child free to begin again.

In many families a shikha — a small tuft at the crown — is left in place. It is a quiet, joyful ceremony, usually attended by grandparents, aunts and uncles as much as by the parents.

What the ceremony brings

The samskara is a purification. It marks the child's passage out of infancy and is associated with clarity, learning and the growth of understanding in the years ahead.

Practical reasons sit alongside the spiritual ones, and older generations will often mention them: exposure to sunlight, stimulated circulation at the scalp, and relief from the discomfort of teething.

Choosing the muhurat

Most families ask pandit ji to calculate the day from the child's birth details. Mundan is generally held between the ages of one and five, favouring odd-numbered months and years — the seventh, ninth or eleventh month, or the first, third or fifth year.

The ceremony can be held at home, at a temple, or by flowing water. Tell us which you prefer and we will arrange the setup and, where needed, the temple booking.
