Why families perform it

Griha Pravesh — sometimes called Griha Shanti — marks the moment a building becomes a home. The Vedic tradition treats moving in as a beginning rather than a formality, and the ceremony is performed before the family sleeps in the house for the first time.

The intention is simple: to settle the space, invite calm into it, and start life there on a clear note. Families perform it for newly built houses, for homes they have just purchased, and after a significant renovation.

What the ceremony brings

A Ganesh puja usually opens the ritual, asking for obstacles to be cleared from the new chapter. A havan then follows, and the smoke and mantras are understood to purify both the household and the space itself.

Griha Pravesh sits within the wider Vastu Shanti tradition. Alongside the household deities, the navagraha and the Vastu Purush are honoured so that the house and everyone living in it are looked after.

Choosing the muhurat

Once the house is ready, a date and time are fixed by astrological calculation rather than convenience alone. Our pandit ji will look at your details and the panchang, then give you a shortlist that also works for your family and guests.

Muhurat matters more for Griha Pravesh than for most ceremonies, so it is worth starting the conversation early — particularly if you are tied to a settlement or handover date.
